School of Backcountry Horsemanship

Ever dream of being able to take a horse or mule deep into the backcountry, far from the restraints of the modern world?  Do you want to really get away from it all and see country that few ever do?

While beautiful and majestic the wilderness can be rugged and untamed and requires specalized horsemansip skills and a basic understanding of the backcountry, mountains and trails.

 

At Storm Creek Outfitters We will Teach You these skills through hands on learning and riding every day.  This class is not only educational but very fun.

Storm Creek Outfitters operates year round in The Frank Church River of No Return and the Selway/Bitterroot Wilderness. We are a family run outfit that specializes in outstanding personalized service.  We consider our guides and teachers the best in the business and most of them have worked for us for years.  We take pride having the finest camps, stock, crew and food in the backcountry.This is some of the most rugged and beautiful country you will ever see.

 

The skills you’ll learn and practice with us will translate to safety and confidence when you return home to ride. 


We provide food, lodging, experienced mountain horses and mules and the best guides in the business.  During our six day course we will cover the following skills:

  • Wilderness laws, values and ethics

  • Safety around stock

  • How to choose and use wilderness stock, tack and equipment

  • Horse and mule basics

    • Anatomy

    • Grooming

    • Back country horse first aid

    • Emergency shoeing

  • Basic equitation

  • Mountain riding techniques

  • Mountain orienteering

  • Trailering / transporting horses across state lines

  • Dealing with trail hazards and obstacles

  • Basic wilderness skills and survival

  • How to deal with emergencies

  • History of the Selway

  • Camping with horses

  • Cooking in the backcountry

 

Class is during the day, in the evenings you’ll have free time to enjoy awsome fly fishing for wild wester cutthroat trout, ride, hike or just enjoying nature by the campfire.  Wether you own our own mules, or are just beginning your backcounrty adventures, everyone is welcome and is sure to learn a lot.  Classes are limited to 10 students.  Group discounts are available for groups of 4 or more.

 

Accommodations and location:

You will stay in our deluxe Kit Carson Basecamp, sleep in real beds and enjoy great meals.  We are located approximately half way between Yellowstone and Glacier National Parks, about 1½ hours south of Missoula, MT.   If you plan to fly, arrange flights to Missoula (MSO).
